e northern Shans, andunlike the Karens and southernShans, who have the jacket cutlike an open English vest. Large holes are bored through the ear lobe; and in some tribes itis customary on holidays and market days to wear in the ear an orna-mental silver tube from six to nine inches long by haK an inch indiameter. The front end of each tube is filled with the blooms of thescarlet hybiscus, sprays of orchid, or some other gay-roloured flowers.which hang down on each side of the face. In some of the tribes themen—in common with the southern Shans—enlarge the opening tosuch an extent that they can insert a section of bamboo of one anda half inches in diameter. In travelling between their mountain homes and the market townsof the Chino-Shan valleys on the east, or the Irrawaddy valley ofBurmah on the west, the Kachins are usually accompanied by smalloxen as pack animals. On thereturn journey they carry raw cotton (a bale being divided into twopacks to form an ox-load), cotton piece goods, ready-made clothes,and a few other commodities, particularly salt, which is brought fromEngland in bulk in the holds of ships. Many of the Kachins are slaves to the use of opium, having learntthe habit from the Chinese merchants with whom they have come incontact, but their way of using the drug differs from the modeadopted by the Chinese. Each smoker carries with him a largeround copper spoon or small ladle, about three inches in diameter;into this he puts some opium with a little water, and puts it on thefire.
