Wolfram or Tungsten is a transition metal. Its symbol is W and its atomic number is 74. It is gray in color.
Uses
Tungsten is very hard. It is very dense. Its melting point is very high. Because its melting point is so high, it has many uses, including that of light bulb filament. It is used in alloys when resistance to unbearable heat is required.
Origins of the Word
The word wolfram is German in origin. The word Tungsten is Swedish in origin. In Swedish 'Tungsten' means Heavy Stone. Tung means heavy and sten means stone.
