Suspect

Reactions

Mayor Carl Sheline said that he was "heartbroken" for Lewiston.[40] Senator Angus King wrote on Twitter that he was "deeply sad".[41] Lewiston City Councilor Robert McCarthy, whose home is located less than a mile from the location of one of the shootings, recalled the incident as "a real scary event".[42] Maine's U.S. representatives, Jared Golden and Chellie Pingree, both released statements expressing shock at the events.[43] Governor Janet Mills was briefed on the shootings and urged residents to follow law enforcement instructions.[44] The mayor of Auburn, Maine, said that "we will get this situation settled."[45]

Federal

President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting while hosting a state dinner at the White House for the Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese.[46] He stepped away from the dinner to meet with his advisors[47] and called several Maine lawmakers to offer full federal support.[48] On October 26, Biden ordered in a proclamation for flags to be lowered to half-mast for 5 days as "a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on October 25, 2023, in Lewiston, Maine".[49] In a later statement, Biden urged lawmakers to impose an Assault Weapons Ban and introduce more gun laws, stating that it is "not normal, and we cannot accept it," and adding that current safety actions are "simply not enough."[50]

Organizations

The Boston Celtics reacted to the shooting by offering their thoughts on Twitter alongside an image of Jayson Tatum dribbling a basketball and the score of a game; the team was heavily criticized for this post, and it was deleted. They then posted the tweet again, this time without an image or graphic.[51]
