從1953年蘇聯領導人約瑟夫·斯大林去世到1962年古巴導彈危機的冷戰歷史如下所述。斯大林去世後,新領導人試圖將蘇聯「去斯大林化」,導致東方集團及華約成員國的動盪。[1]儘管如此,國際緊張局勢仍有緩和跡象,這一跡象可以在簽署《奧地利國家條約》重新統一奧地利和日內瓦協議結束印度支那戰爭時看到。然而,這段美好的時光只是暫時的,在這段時間裡,一場昂貴的軍備競賽仍在繼續,而兩個超級大國之間也發生了一場不那麼令人震驚但卻非常昂貴的太空競賽。非洲國家加入到這場冷戰,如剛果民主共和國加入蘇聯陣營,對西方造成了更多的震動。[2]
