Plot

[編輯]

在一間廢棄的房子裏,艾莉英語Ellie (The Last of Us)貝拉·拉姆齊飾)試着處置喬爾英語Joel (The Last of Us)佩德羅·帕斯卡飾)的傷口[a]。

Conception and writing

The episode was written by series co-creator 尼爾·德魯克曼.[6]

"Left Behind" was written by 最後生還者 (電視劇) series co-creator 尼爾·德魯克曼 and directed by Liza Johnson英語Liza Johnson.[6][7] The Directors Guild of Canada英語Directors Guild of Canada revealed Johnson was assigned to direct for the series in January 2022.[8] Johnson played the game after being assigned to the series.[9] "Left Behind" is an adaptation of The Last of Us: Left Behind英語The Last of Us: Left Behind (2014), an 擴展包 of 最後生還者 on which the series is based.[10] Druckmann and series co-creator Craig Mazin英語Craig Mazin encouraged Johnson and cinematographer Ksenia Sereda to take liberties with the episode and not feel constrained to replicating the source material.[10]

For Riley's first appearance in the comic book 最後生還者:美國夢, artist Faith Erin Hicks英語Faith Erin Hicks and developers at 頑皮狗 created an original fictional arcade game, The Turning, to circumvent issues with licensing;[11] for the television series, Druckmann and Mazin were able to use 真人快打II,[b] the game on which The Turning was based.[1](47:19) Druckmann and Mazin avoided positioning any faction as purely good or evil, and showed the more positive side of FEDRA in "Left Behind" to juxtapose their negative depictions in 當你迷失在黑暗中.[1](12:47) The episode was originally written without any reference to Joel; producers at HBO requested a connection to the main story, like Left Behind had.[1](4:44)

Casting and characters

[編輯]

斯托姆·瑞德's casting as Riley was announced on January 14, 2022.[12] Reid was unfamiliar with the game prior to her casting; when approached to star in the show, she asked family and friends for their opinions on the game.[13] She watched snippets of gameplay to understand the emotion, but otherwise avoided the game to ensure an original take on the role;[14] she wanted to "hone in on" the manner in which Riley moves and "took up space".[13] Reid worked on the series for about a month.[14] She found the episode's portrayal of children refreshing as it had been absent from recent episodes.[15][16]

貝拉·拉姆齊, who portrays Ellie, found Ellie and Riley's chemistry relatable and noted it made their performance easier. Ramsey and Reid had little time to bond prior to production.[17] They became close over the course of production; Reid called Ramsey "Mom" in one take.[18] The scene at the arcade was improvised; Ramsey and Reid were playing a working version of Mortal Kombat II. Ramsey had not watched Ellie's infection scene prior to their performance, and afterwards noted their version was more angry than the game's fearful.[17] Reid found the final scene emotional to perform as it was one of the last filmed.[19] Ramsey encountered some difficulty with the school scenes as they had not attended school since they started acting when they were eleven.[20]

Music

[編輯]

A-ha's song "帶我走 (阿哈歌曲)" is used as Ellie discovers the escalator. A 翻唱 of the song was previously used in a trailer for the series, and Ellie (played by 艾希莉·強森) performs the song in the video game 最後生還者 第II章 (2020).[21] Following its use in the episode, "Take On Me" ranked first on 告示牌 (雜誌)'s Top TV Songs 告示牌榜單 for February.[22] Collider's Julio Bardini found the song's earlier lyrics reflected Ellie and Riley's feelings towards each other, while the later lyrics illustrated Ellie's journey after discovering her immunity:[21]

Needless to say
I'm odds and ends
But I'll be stumbling away
Slowly learning that life is okay
Say after me
It's no better to be safe than sorry[21]

Druckmann chose the song "All or None英語All or None (song)" by 珍珠果醬樂隊 as it represented Ellie's loneliness and uncomfortability, and the title reflected her general attitude in life.[1](7:28) The inclusion of the Rockabye Baby!英語Rockabye Baby! version of "Just Like Heaven英語Just Like Heaven (The Cure song)" was a suggestion of co-editor Timothy A. Good, who had been wanting to use it for some time.[1](38:27) 伊特·珍's version of "I Got You Babe英語I Got You Babe" was reused from the game; Druckmann felt the song's romantic lyrics hidden by joyous music mirrored the feelings of Ellie and Riley.[1](56:28)

Filming

[編輯]

Production designer John Paino hoped to find an American-style mall within 卡爾加里 for production, having spent much of his childhood in malls.[23] The crew was granted permission to transform the Northland Village Mall英語Northland Village Mall for production as it was scheduled for demolition.[1](29:37)[9] Decoration of the mall took place in January 2022, with dried leaves, broken pylons, and other debris.[24] Paino and his team built around 20 to 25 storefronts in the mall, each rundown versions of real businesses such as Foot Locker, 熊貓快餐, and 維多利亞的秘密.[23] It was unsuitable for some shots as it mostly consisted of a single story, rather than two stories like the area in the game, prompting the usage of a 攝影棚 and 視覺效果; the background of the shot in which the lighting is switched on was crafted through visual effects, for which Mazin and Druckmann had several meetings with visual effects supervisor Alex Wang.[1](29:37)

The carousel—the Chinook Carousel英語Chinook Centre, manufactured by the Allan Herschell Company英語Allan Herschell Company in 1941—was rented from Spruce Meadows英語Spruce Meadows and set up at Northland Village Mall for filming;[23][25] center panels referencing the 卡加利牛仔節 were replaced by reflective panels to add a "hallucinatory feel".[23] The arcade consisted of real arcade machines like 青蛙過河 and 俄羅斯方塊, as Mazin and Druckmann wanted to evoke realism; the 陰極射線管 screens were replaced by 發光二極管s to allow a clear image when filmed.[23] Sereda used three simultaneous cameras for the arcade sequence, allowing editors Timothy A. Good and Emily Mendez to easily cross-cut英語Cross-cutting between takes英語takes.[26] Abandoned stores at the mall were used as green room英語green rooms for actors.[20] Production moved in 奧克托克斯 in January, with added trees, grass, and snow; filming occurred in February.[27]

Critical response

The performances of 貝拉·拉姆齊 (left) and 斯托姆·瑞德 (right) were widely praised by critics,[34][35][36] and the latter won awards at the Black Reel Awards英語7th Annual Black Reel Awards for Television and Primetime Emmy Awards英語75th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.[37][38]

On review aggregator 爛番茄, "Left Behind" has an approval rating of 97 percent based on 32 reviews, with an average rating of 8.4/10. The website's critical consensus called it a "heartbreaking duet between Bella Ramsey and Storm Reid".[39] Several critics praised the visuals of the mall;[2][3] Den of Geek英語Den of Geek's Bernard Boo enjoyed the blend of artificiality and romance,[35] and Push Square英語Push Square's Aaron Bayne applauded its similarities to the game.[4] Total Film英語Total Film's Bradley Russell found the opening sequence ethereal, mirroring Joel's fading consciousness.[40] 影音俱樂部's David Cote lauded the fight sequence as the best close-combat scene in the series to date.[34] The episode's use of music was well received.[35][41]

Ramsey and Reid's performances received praise;[41][42] Bleeding Cool英語Bleeding Cool's Tom Chang called them "award-worthy".[43] Several critics found their chemistry convincing and the episode's highlight.[34][35][36] Bleeding Cool's Chang and /Film英語/Film's Rafael Motamayor considered the episode Ramsey's strongest to date,[2][43] and IGN's Simon Cardy and Push Square's Bayne found it an effective showcase of their acting talents.[4][41] Total Film's Bradley Russell lauded Ramsey's reaction of Ellie's infection, particularly following their quieter reactions earlier.[40] /Film's Motamayor wrote Reid "gives a memorable performance that ... sticks with you long after the credits roll",[2] and Push Square's Bayne felt she effectively captured Riley's sense of "youthful pride".[4] Bleeding Cool's Chang felt the performances benefited from Johnson's experience in directing female-led drama series.[43] For her performance, Reid won Outstanding Guest Actress英語Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series at the 75th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards英語75th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards[38] and Outstanding Guest Performance in a Drama Series at the 7th Annual Black Reel Awards for Television英語7th Annual Black Reel Awards for Television.[37]

IGN's Cardy called the episode a "beautifully faithful adaptation".[41] 大西洋 (雜誌)'s Shirley Li considered the story a "quiet celebration of the world that once existed".[44] Den of Geek's Boo found the present-day scenes short and poetic.[35] io9英語io9's Germain Lussier praised the use of flashbacks to contextualize Ellie's predicament in the present as "a stroke of genius", and lauded Ellie's reactions to the mall lights and arcade;[42] The Escapist's Darren Mooney similarly found Ellie and Riley's reactions impactful.[45] Slate's Nadira Goffe applauded the use of a mall as a quintessential 成年禮 setting.[46] Total Film's Bradley Russell found the resolve of the previous episode's cliffhanger abrupt, and the ending of the episode rushed in comparison to previous scenes.[40] Kotaku's Kenneth Shepard felt the replacement of The Turning with Mortal Kombat II was corporate-led and failed to recreate one of the game's strongest scenes.[47] /Film's Motamayor wrote the episode suffered the trope of black characters dying only to motivate white characters.[2]
