"Kin" is the sixth episode of the first season（英語：The Last of Us season 1） of the American 末日幻想 劇情片 television series 最後生還者 (電視劇). The episode was written by series co-creator Craig Mazin（英語：Craig Mazin） and directed by 亞斯米拉·日巴尼奇. It aired on HBO on February 19, 2023. In the episode, Joel（英語：Joel (The Last of Us)） (佩德羅·帕斯卡) and Ellie（英語：Ellie (The Last of Us)） (貝拉·拉姆齊) travel to 傑克遜 (懷俄明州), where they find Joel's brother 最後生還者 (電視劇)角色列表 (蓋布瑞·盧納) and his wife 最後生還者 (電視劇)角色列表 (Rutina Wesley（英語：Rutina Wesley）).

The episode was filmed in November and December 2021. Žbanić was drawn to the story as she felt the functioning society of Jackson reflected her experiences growing up in 薩拉熱窩. The town of 坎莫爾, was used to replicate Jackson; local businesses were transformed and buildings were constructed in the town, including a 30-英尺-tall（9.1-米） log wall on a major street. The episode received positive reviews, with praise for its writing, direction, cinematography, and performances of Pascal, Ramsey, and Luna. It was watched by 7.8 million viewers on its first day. Plot

"Kin" was written by 最後生還者 (電視劇) series co-creator Craig Mazin（英語：Craig Mazin） and directed by 亞斯米拉·日巴尼奇;[4][5] it was Žbanić's first experience in directing television.[6] She was announced as one of the show's directors in April 2021.[7] Žbanić was offered to direct the previous two episodes—"Please Hold to My Hand（英語：Please Hold to My Hand）" and "Endure and Survive（英語：Endure and Survive）", which take place in war-torn 堪薩斯城 (密蘇里州)—as she had lived through the 薩拉熱窩圍城戰役. However, she was more interested in "Kin" as it demonstrated a functioning society;[6][1]（19:05） she felt she had survived in 薩拉熱窩 due to solidarity, which she wanted to reflect in Jackson. Žbanić attempted to play the game before watching YouTube videos instead, particularly of the sequences featured in "Kin". She found players told her they wanted "emotions and atmosphere" in the show, which she sought to include.[6]

Mazin and co-creator 尼爾·德魯克曼, who wrote and co-directed 最後生還者 on which the series is based, wanted the beginning of "Kin" to provide levity after the traumatic ending of the previous episode, as well as demonstrate the development in Joel and Ellie's relationship.[1]（5:25） Joel's mention of feeling as though he has lost something in his sleep was a contribution by 佩德羅·帕斯卡, who portrays the character.[1]（33:29） Mazin wanted Joel and Ellie's argument to be almost identical to the game's version, including the blocking（英語：Blocking (stage)） and set design, due to its effectiveness and the impact it had on him;[1]（36:56） he considered it the game's most famous scene.[8]（3:53） Joel's injury was altered from the game—in which he is impaled by 鋼筋 after falling from a second-story balcony—as the series is more grounded in its action and impacts.[1]（47:36）

Jackson was not shown in the first game; Tommy and Maria's scenes in the first game took place at the dam near Jackson as the team lacked the time and budget to add the town. Jackson became the starting location for 最後生還者 第II章 (2020).[6] For the show, Mazin and Druckmann felt moving the scenes inside the town made them more interesting.[1]（15:18） Ellie's interest in space was introduced in Part II. Mazin felt the television series provided the opportunity to reference elements of the sequel earlier.[1]（9:24） Joel's interest in living on a sheep ranch was similarly a reference to Part II.[1]（11:18） The girl staring at Ellie is a reference to Part II's Dina（英語：Dina (The Last of Us)）.[1]（17:37）

A song from the game's score（英語：Music of The Last of Us）—"All Gone" by Gustavo Santaolalla—is used in the episode to remind viewers of Sarah's death.[1]（25:25） The credits use the song "Never Let Me Down Again（英語：Never Let Me Down Again）", sung by Mazin's daughter Jessica; the original version by 流行尖端 was used in 當你迷失在黑暗中. Mazin wanted the song to use a female voice to echo Ellie. He appreciated the moment as it involved Jessica, his real daughter, and Ellie's actor 貝拉·拉姆齊, who he considered like an adopted daughter.[1]（48:54） Mazin included the film 再見女郎 (1977), which he had watched growing up, as it told the story of a child gaining a father figure. He felt the inclusion of art demonstrated the town's functionality.[1]（31:16）

Casting and characters

Žbanić revealed the casting of 葛拉罕·葛林 (演員), Elaine Miles（英語：Elaine Miles）, and Rutina Wesley（英語：Rutina Wesley） on December 9, 2021.[9] Greene and Miles were confirmed to be playing original characters Marlon and Florence in August 2022.[10] Mazin felt, like other pairings in the show, they echoed parts of Joel and Ellie's relationship.[1]（4:11） Wesley's role as Maria was announced on January 9, 2023.[11] She researched the game to "capture the essence" of Maria but wanted to avoid replicating it;[12] she found it "terrifying" to play a pre-established character but wanted to add her "energy on it".[13] She appreciated Maria's calmness as a leader and observed she was a person who only smiles with her eyes;[13] she thought Maria naturally entered a leadership role due to her history as an 地方檢察官.[12] Wesley felt Maria gravitated towards Ellie in a motherly manner without realizing, due in part to her pregnancy.[13] 蓋布瑞·盧納 felt Tommy was drawn towards Maria due to "her mercy and her strength".[14] He thought Tommy felt guilty for moving on from Sarah's death, whereas Joel has not.[14]

Filming

Christine A. Maier worked as 攝影指導 for the episode.[9] Preparations took place in 坎莫爾—the stand-in for Jackson[17][15]—from November 1–16, 2021, followed by production from November 15–20,[17] with Pascal, Ramsey, and Luna present on set;[18][19] approximately 300 extras were used,[20] as well as horses.[21] Most businesses in the town signed agreements regarding the show's impact, with the production paying between 1,000加元 and 1,500加元 per day.[20]

Production designer John Paino wanted Jackson to show the "natural beauty" of the 美國中西部 to contrast with the "concrete" of the previous locations.[22] His team built greenhouses and stables on empty parking lots, and added details to the existing buildings in Canmore. The 30-英尺-tall（9.1-米） log wall was built on a major street in the town; it needed to be opened to allow traffic to pass.[22] Joel and Tommy's conversation at a bar was filmed in the Wainwright Hotel in Heritage Park Historical Village（英語：Heritage Park Historical Village）, which Paino felt "fit the Western rustic（英語：Rustic architecture） thing".[23]

In late November, filming occurred at 皇家山大學 and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology（英語：Southern Alberta Institute of Technology） (SAIT),[16] recreating the fictional University of Eastern Colorado.[24] Snow was removed at SAIT and foliage added to both locations to produce an autumnal setting.[16] Žbanić completed production on December 9.[9]

Reception

Broadcast and ratings

The episode aired on HBO on February 19, 2023.[25] The episode had 7.8 million viewers in the United States on its first night, including 廣播節目編排 and streams on Max (流媒體).[26] On linear television, it had 841,000 viewers, with a 0.28 ratings share（英語：ratings share）.[27] On HBO Max, it was streamed for approximately 759.6 million minutes from February 20 to 26.[28] Viewers noticed two shots in which production members were briefly visible;[29][30] they were digitally erased from the episode several days later.[31]

The performances of 佩德羅·帕斯卡, 貝拉·拉姆齊, and 蓋布瑞·盧納 (L–R) were praised by critics,[2][32][33] earning Pascal an 第75屆黃金時段艾美獎 nomination for Lead Actor in a Drama Series（英語：Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series）.[34]

On review aggregator 爛番茄, "Kin" has an approval rating of 100 percent based on 31 reviews, with an average rating of 8.7/10. The website's critical consensus called the episode "a relatively gentle installment that spotlights some of Pedro Pascal's most arresting work yet".[35] IndieWire's Steve Greene felt Jackson's presentation benefited from Žbanić's direction;[36] 影音俱樂部's David Cote praised her control of the episode's varying tones and wrote "Kin" was "probably the most visually gorgeous episode so far".[37] IGN's Simon Cardy favorably compared the cinematography to classic 西部片 like 搜索者 (1956) and 大地驚雷 (1969).[38]

Den of Geek（英語：Den of Geek）'s Bernard Boo called Pascal and Ramsey's performances "possibly the best ... of their respective careers".[39] Pascal was nominated for Lead Actor in a Drama Series（英語：Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series） at the 第75屆黃金時段艾美獎 for his performance.[34] TVLine（英語：TVLine） named him the Performer of the Week, citing his emotions and physicality;[40] Push Square（英語：Push Square）'s Aaron Bayne opined Pascal balanced "stoic masculinity with tender vulnerability",[41] and The A.V. Critics lauded Mazin's writing.[39][47] io9's Lussier found the episode's focus on survival encapsulated the best qualities of the series.[32] Total Film（英語：Total Film）'s Bradley Russell praised the script's use of humor and interactions between Joel and Tommy, and, while resolved too neatly, considered Joel and Ellie's confrontation among the show's best moments to date.[2] The A.V. Club's Cote similarly commended Mazin's humor, emotions, and economic use of dialogue.[37] The Verge's Alex Cranz appreciated the improved pacing by omitting the game's action sequences.[48] The Escapist's Darren Mooney and Inverse（英語：Inverse (website)）'s Dais Johnston applauded the recognition of 共產主義 in Jackson as a refreshing subversion of post-apocalyptic stories.[49][50] Several critics admired the inclusion of a 月經杯, noting 女性生理用品 is often unacknowledged in the genre.[51][52][53] IGN's Cardy and Push Square's Bayne found the ending slightly rushed despite the high quality elsewhere.[38][41]
